Discussion Questions
What do you think the significance of the frozen pond with the ducks is?
Do you think that Phoebe might be able to get through to Holden and help him get better ( as he has obviously gone through a lot)?
Why do you think he desperately needs to talk to Phoebe?
Why do you think Holden wanted to go home see Phoebe and get out straight away, and not see his parents?
Is Holden just curious about what has been going on with Phoebe, if so then why did he read through her books instead of just asking her?
Do you think Phoebe cares about Holden the same way he cares about her?

Character Analysis
Holden- I find that Holden is very deep; he has a lot of inner values and is more than just the arrogant vain self he gives off to the rest of the world. He has a lot of needs, and wants to do these things, like having sex with the prostitute Sunny, but when the moment comes he cant do it, either because he had too strong feelings for Jane, or he thought it was immoral and not good and his conscious is more part of his life than he makes it seem. I think he tries to be rebellious and bad but deep down all he wants is acceptance and to have friends, maybe to have a good time with people he actually likes. He seems to want to but his arrogance and his over cockiness makes him thinking that he is better than everybody else and they are all phony and not good enough to hang with him. Holden is not very sociable because of his arrogance. He obviously has some sort of problem, maybe he has some sort of ADD or ADHD, as he is always doing things that are no on subject or getting distracted by something he is just thinking of that is totally off topic, like when he was talking to his teacher Mr. Spencer. I think that Holden needs somebody to love him, he is very alone going through a mild depression that he hasn’t realized yet, he never has friends, he never has female company, and he hasn’t seen his sister that he loves so much. He needs something good to happen in his life recently or I think that he might go into crime or some kind of bad work. He also likes to lie a lot; maybe he is a craver of attention?
Why do you think Holden Lies so much?
Ackley-Ackley is an annoying person, he doesn’t have any friends and is even more unsociable than Holden, he doesn’t seem to stay in for a reason, he probably just has no body to do anything with, and he doesn’t try to fit in. He is quite mean, people would feel sorry for him and maybe be friend him but he is a jerk and pushes everybody that tries to get close away. Its hard to determine whether Ackley enjoys being the way he is or he is oblivious to it, the book does not give us much view on Ackley, it shows him from Holden’s point of view that he is annoying and ugly but it doesn’t show him as a real person so its hard to imagine him as a confused teenage boy with mixed feelings about life and someone we can feel sorry for. Ackley hates everybody, he refuses to make friends, I’m not sure why this is because people try to be nice to him but he refuses their kindness. Ackley has no social life he thinks Holden as a friend but he cant stand him (well he cant stand anybody) Maybe Ackley is Holden’s inspiration, that Holden is pretty screwed up but he says to himself, “at least imp not as bad as Ackley”.
Why do you think that Ackley refuses all friends and is totally unsociable.
